Apple Gears Up for iPad's United States Release
Apple’s iPad may not have attracted ultra-positive coverage throughout the technology blogosphere, but it’s certainly built buzz elsewhere. The touch screen computing device is due to release next week in the United States, and Apple stores across the country are already gearing up for the wide release of the hotly anticipated product.
After pre-order sales figures were released, many technology gurus predicting the device’s failure were forced to eat their words. The iPad reportedly sold over 120,000 units in its first day on market (units are pre-ordered and delivered at the beginning of April) squashing industry predictions and setting an all-out sales record for devices in its category.
With a release that’s being dubbed even more successful than the iPhone, Apple could be moving towards their third giant product release in the last decade. 2001′s iPod sparked a revolution in the music industry, changing bulky mp3 players into centralized devices, and selling hundreds of millions of units in the process.
Then in 2007 came the iPhone – Apple’s touch screen smartphone. With almost 40 million iPhones (and iPod Touch) sold across the world, Apple’s revolutionary smart phone caught consumers, and the entire phone industry, by surprise. In a press move remarkably similar to the iPad, the iPhone initially gained mostly negative coverage from bloggers, with many complaining about the device’s lack of power.
While Apple has allowed buyers to pre-order their iPads (iPhone was only available as an in-store purchase) it’s clear that the device will have a large retail sales opening. Following in the tradition of past Apple product releases, users are planning to wait outside Apple stores for the grand opening. With many stores expecting relatively limited levels of stock, some Apple gurus could be in for disappointment.
The iPad is scheduled for a UK release in ‘late April’, according to Apple’s own PR documents and release summaries. Prices are currently unknown, but given Apple’s standard strategy of pricing reasonably in-line with USA releases, many are expecting base level iPads to be available for under £400.
British comedian, TV host, and Apple fan Stephen Fry has expressed his approval of the device, calling it the type of device that “James Bond would have.” Praising the device’s simple design and intuitive operating system, Fry contended that the iPad was significantly more than an up-sized and upgraded iPod – but a full-featured mobile computing device and game-changing piece of technology.
Whether it’s all conjecture of real truth is yet unknown. However, American Apple fans are in for an enjoyable night on April 3rd. With hundreds of thousands of pre-order customers expecting to pick up, configure, and enjoy the first line of Apple iPads, expect to see a lot more coverage on the iPad in the coming weeks.
