iPad is Coming to the UK: What You Need to Know
USA residents have been lucky enough to enjoy the iPad for over a month, and while unofficially imported versions have found their way into UK retailers, the vast majority of shops across the nation lack an official release from Apple. However, all is set to change on the 28th of May, when Apple introduce the iPad in the UK, Australia, and several European markets.
Details on availability are limited right now, but we believe Apple will have enough in stock to cope with the large demand in the UK. iPad sold out upon its release in the USA, with numerous stores unable to cope with demand, leading Apple to increase availability in retail outlets for the UK product launch.
Potential buyers can pre-order the device from Apple’s online store now, with the entire range of wifi and 3G models available online. Shipping options vary depending on location, although almost all UK areas qualify for on-the-day postage and delivery. Alongside the iPad hardware, Apple plan to release iBooks – a reading application for the iPad – on May 28th.
Priced at £429, the most basic iPad is significantly more expensive when purchased in the UK than in the USA. Prices begin at just $499 across the pond, although Apple’s retail prices exclude sales tax, which can vary between different states. The 16GB 3G model starts at £529 in the UK, with the top-of-the-line 64GB 3G model available for £699.
While wifi users needn’t worry about connectivity or mobile usage, 3G users will need to invest in a mobile data plan for their iPad. The device ships without network locking or restrictions, giving users the ability to pick from a range of different providers. Standard 3G iPads can be used without a data plan, instead connecting through local wifi connections to download updates and view online content.
