The British Library plans on digitizing newspapers
So the government has decided that they need to maintain records and maintain them well and these important records as is part of every British household is the daily newspaper. So, what would be the best way to preserve securely all the tons of newspapers from over the years so that it cannot all be lost at once in a fire or in a flood or in the middle of any such crisis or disaster? Well, the best way of storing information known to man is simply to digitize it and that is exactly what the latest initiative is as part of the campaign- UK News Archive initiative. So how many newspapers exactly are they going to digitize as part of this enormous campaign? That approximate number would be a whopping fifty two thousand newspapers.
It is the British Library that has taken on the responsibility of this campaign and they plan on digitizing all those fifty two thousand newspapers that they have in storage in Colindale. They plan on simply scanning and storing these newspapers which is actually the best way to digitize such an immense number of newspapers in a fairly short period of time. However this project will of course need money to fund all that scanning and all that digitizing and this money is going to be provided by a private company- Brightsolid.
The newspapers will first be scanned and then they will be added to this newspaper database that has been created for the British library. After the scanning has been done of a particular newspaper, it will be available for viewing in certain branches of the library which includes the Colindale and St Pancras branches in London as well. However, you can also access all these scanned newspapers from your home through the internet as well, however for this kind of access you will have to pay Brightsolid a certain rate for this, which is obviously the way that the company will be gaining back all the money that they have invested into building up this news archive for the country, and the money that they have reportedly invested in this campaign could actually be millions.
Newspapers are actually an invaluable source of information for loads of people all around the country, whether it is for historians or students or even different kinds of researchers, these newspapers can become their biggest source of information as well as material. They are also planning on making all these pages completely searchable which will make it easier for those using the newspapers for material and various kinds of researching.
