Tunnel fires can be prevented using infrared cameras
You might be surprised to know the world of good something as small as a camera can actually do, however the one is question is not quite the ordinary camera but an infrared one. Recent studies that are being conducted in Germany to find a way by which these infra red cameras can be used to prevent any of those deadly tunnel fires, that you read and hear about so often. What has been discovered that all of the worst cases of tunnel fires that have killed so many have been caused by some kind of a major defect in the vehicles or have been caused by the engine of a vehicle that has run very hot. So the tests that are being conducted are being tested with infra red cameras that are going to be placed in strategic locations in front of these tunnels so that they will be able to pick up on those potential vehicles which can cause this kind of a fire inside the tunnel. If these vehicles are detected in time then they can be prevented from entering the tunnel and thus a possible deadly accident can be avoided.
Basically, the system is that these cameras that are going to be placed at least a kilometer in front of the tunnel will be able to rapidly take pictures of the vehicles passing through and in time they will be able to compare these with previous reference photographs so that they might be able to spot any kind of defects with brakes or with the engine etc. Instantly if a defect is detected then an alarm will go off so that authorities can help stop the vehicle from entering the tunnel without a thorough investigation of the suspicion of such a defect.
Some very deadly tunnel fires have already taken place all over the world that have killed many and have practically
been unstoppable once the fire starts inside the tunnel. This kind of technology if developed fully might actually be able to save a lot of lives and prevent fires and disasters from taking place. The tests are also going to try using Radio Frequency Identification to make a log of all the things that have been carried inside the trucks that have crossed through the tunnel so that if a fire should happen to break out, firefighters and those coming to the rescue can be prepared in the right way to deal with whatever substances might be fueling the fire.
