The Toshiba NB520 is an incredibly efficient, portable, and aesthetically pleasing netbook for its price range (with a suggested retail price of £280). The stylish, yet ergonomically sound design of the NB520, combined with its durability makes it an ideal laptop for travelers, business professionals, and students.

This netbook carries a powerful Intel Atom 1.66 GHz N550 Dual Core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a 250 GB hard drive. The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 HD Graphics card creates an ideal media viewing experience, particularly when an external display is used. The 10.1 inch LED display is capable of 1024 x 600 resolution, and is backlit for ideal use in low light conditions. The NB520 comes preloaded with the Windows 7 Starter operating system, and includes a non-HD built-in WebCam.

With three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a memory card reader that is compatible with multiple formats, the Toshiba NB520 provides extensive connectivity for external storage devices and displays. The nearly full-size keyboard and multi-gesture touchpad gives the user supreme comfort and functionality by fully utilizing the netbook’s available space.

The Harmon/Kardon speakers are surprisingly powerful, and are placed on either side of the laptop in the front on either side of the touchpad to provide the loudest possible output, offering deep bass and surprising depth for integrated netbook speakers. In fact, some experts and users have stated that the Toshiba NB520 provides the best audio of any netbook on the market, which is excellent considering the fact it costs under £300.

The battery life ranges from 5 to 8 hours, depending on the mode of use; in power saver mode is possible to enjoy 20 minutes of media playback while only consuming 1% of the battery life. Ultimately, despite lacking an HDMI port and having a relatively basic design, the Toshiba NB520 is an ideal netbook for its price and size range.

Toshiba’s latest mid-range mobile creation is a difficult machine to describe. Packing features which are utterly unremarkable and offering performance that’s all but expected for mobile users, it hardly seems like a tech industry favourite the first time you see it. But underneath the bland spec sheet is a laptop that’s equal parts incredibly portable and user-friendly; and best of all, it’s one that almost any consumer can afford to purchase.

Boasting a design reminiscent of Apple’s Macbook Pro and Lenovo’s professional ThinkPad line, the Portege R700 is one of the most simultaneously sleek and professional notebooks we’ve seen over the last few years. A separate-key keyboard is included, along with the now-standard sunken touchpad and a magnesium-aluminium enclosure designed to minimize unwanted heat.

With a thirteen-inch screen and a solid chassis, Toshiba may have inadvertently created the ultimate Windows 7 travel laptop. We’ve tested the Portege R700 against its other compact rivals and walked away with favourable opinions. Toshiba claim that it’s the lightest thirteen-inch laptop ever released, and we’re inclined to believe them.

But unlike its other ultra-compact competitors, the R700 boasts performance that’s more at home in a bulky ‘gaming’ laptop. Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors will be available, each paired with 4GB of RAM and a series of internal storage options. The standard R700 ships with a 500GB hard drive, although solid-state storage options are available on the Core i5 and i7 models.

While its small screen makes it a poor mobile movie station, the R700 is set up for multimedia in just about every other way. Unlike other ultra-thin laptops, it includes an optical drive and various connectivity options. The screen falls short of offering full 1080p HD resolutions, although it does offer enough real estate to play 720p movies and video footage.

Three USB ports are included, along with an HDMI port and optional 3G. Toshiba have clearly built the R700 with intentions of flattening Apple’s Macbook Air lineup, and given its current specs we’re in agreement with them. The Portege R700 combines portability and power like few laptops can, boasting a nine-hour battery life despite its sizeable processor and multimedia chops.

Pricing information has yet to be released for UK customers, though Toshiba has put out figures for those across the pond. The basic Core i3 R700 will be available from just $899, with more powerful Core i5 and i7 models appearing at $1,299 and $1,599 respectively. The laptop will start appearing in USA retailer in the coming days, with UK stores following suit next month.

Toshiba have clearly outdone themselves with this year’s laptop lineup. With a disruptive dual-touch netbook and an extended high-end lineup, it’s difficult to look past the Korean retailer when wading through 2010′s tech releases. The Portege R700 is far from the greatest laptop on the market, but its combination of immense portability, sleek design, and usable power make it one of our favourite mid-range portable notebooks.

When Asus released the Eee PC in late 2007, technology industry observers were uncertain that mobile computing would catch on. Laptops had already bridged the gap between portability and productivity, with desktop computers remaining popular at home and in the workplace. Who could ever need anything more portable than a thirteen-inch laptop?

As the EeePc – along with hundreds of other netbooks – has proven, there’s inevitably doubt and confusion whenever a game changing product is released. Apple saw it with the iPad; Asus saw it with their revolutionary Eee PC, and now Toshiba are preparing to see a similar level of tech industry uncertainty with the release of their Libretto W100 dual touchscreen laptop.

At first glance, the Libretto W100 looks like any other netbook. It’s small enough to fit in a carry bag, slim enough to slide inside an envelope, and housed in a black plastic enclosure that wouldn’t look out of place alongside Asus’s original Eee PC ultra-portable. But what separates it from other netbooks is its bizarre screen arrangement; unlike other Libretto models, the W100 uses two touch screens manage user input.

It’s an arrangement that’s surprisingly comfortable, especially after a bit of practice. We suspected that the Libretto W100 would fall into the same traps as other touchscreen devices; limited power, questionable usability, and a virtual keyboard that’s worthless for business use. However, it’s in all aspects a powerful device, proving itself useful for almost all standard computing tasks.

The W100 comes with Windows 7 as standard, and uses the operating system’s built-in touchscreen features in a surprisingly natural manner. Browsing the internet is remarkably simple, and scrolling through eBooks and documents feels quite natural. There’s an obvious adjustment period for typists and business users, however we feel that the W100 could eventually become an office tech partner.

An Intel U5400 provides ample power, while 2GB RAM allow users to keep multiple applications open without worry. We can’t recommend the Libretto W100 for multimedia users or as a developer workstation, although it is surprisingly usable for advanced tasks. 64GB of solid state data storage are included as standard, with a single USB 2.0 port giving users alternative control or storage potential.

Amazingly, the Libretto W100′s greatest strength is one that’s barely advertised by Toshiba. Switch the netbook to a portrait orientation and you’ll find its screen display switching with you, creating the ideal mobile reading device. With two seven-inch touchscreens and a more dense pixel layout than Apple’s iPad, the W100 could be the ultimate portable reader.

Toshiba have truly hit the mark with the Libretto W100. It’s a device that’s patently weird at its core, falling into no current categories and having more in common with Nintendo’s DSi gaming console than with its netbook competitors. If the thought of picking up an iPad is too much to handle, then Toshiba’s latest dual-screen touch netbook could be the best choice out there.

Toshiba UK seems to have been putting a lot of effort into trying to find the laptop that is going to fit all kinds of small budgets and yet it will be productive enough to carry out all the functions that their customers are looking for- they have recently released three laptops that belong to this new line which is Satellite Pro.

These laptops are in fact very well suited for small business owners and those who are working from home and are running on a small budget, yet these laptops can be good replacements for the PC and the desktop and function as well as a great productive laptop would with a full 17.3 inches screen. That is the Satellite Pro L670. The other is the L650 which is a slightly smaller laptop in size with a 15.6 inches screen. However, this one is supposed to be perfect for freelance workers and these are the group of customers who Toshiba is targeting with this laptop. However the features of both these are pretty much the same otherwise. The third Satellite Pro laptop of this series C650 comes with the same 15.6 inches screen but this one is more specifically manufactured by those kinds of people who are looking for a laptop that can transport large quantities of materials and information easily, this one comes with a 320 GB of storage.

In each of the three cases with the three models of laptops, Toshiba guarantees that they are designed so that they are very easy to use and will cause you no kind of trouble, even with something like the keypad there are 10 digits separately set aside for the numeric keypad so that all kinds of financial entries can be made easily, especially since these laptops are meant for business people and people working in different fields. There are also some great multi touch features that you can use in the case of working with different images and presentations and also documents, which comes in very handy for business people. This is an effort on the part of Toshiba therefore to update their Satellite Pro models of laptops and whether they have succeeded in this or not depends really on how easy it is to use for the professionals that the company has targeted and not only that, they should also be as easily affordable for those people they are targeting as the company is hoping.
