Anthropic is making its Claude Code weekly limits permanent from 14 September, but the framing deserves a closer look: users who have enjoyed the current temporary boost will end up with less usage than they have right now, not more. The maths is straightforward once you strip away the positive spin.
How the numbers actually stack up
Claude Code has been running with a temporary 50% uplift on its standard weekly allowances. Anthropic announced on X that, from 14 September, it will permanently raise those standard limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. That sounds generous until you work out what 25% of the original baseline actually buys you.
Consider a hypothetical baseline of 100 units. The current temporary boost takes that to 150. From 14 September, the new permanent figure sits at 125. So yes, you are getting 25% more than the original standard allowance, but you are also getting roughly 17% less than you have right now. Anthropic itself acknowledged this directly after deleting its initial announcement thread and posting a clarification: ‘Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.’
The company also flagged that actual usage is not a fixed number of prompts. Claude Code consumption varies based on conversation length, model choice, tool usage, and effort level, so the weekly figure is a capacity ceiling rather than a predictable prompt count.
According to Uprise RI, the temporary 50% increase was originally reported as a promotion set to expire on 19 August, which puts Anthropic’s extended deadline of 14 September in a slightly different light, it is not so much a generous extension as a managed wind-down with a rebranded floor.
Claude Code usage changes have been building for weeks
This is not the first limit-related adjustment Anthropic has made in recent months. ExplainX reports that Anthropic announced new weekly rate limits for Claude Pro and Max on 28 July 2025, confirming on X that the change would take effect in late August and would ‘apply to less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage.’ That narrower audience framing is doing some work: the majority of users may not feel the September reduction immediately, but developers and power users running Claude Code heavily throughout the week are exactly the cohort most likely to notice the gap between 150 and 125.
The backstory to the temporary boost is itself worth understanding. Morph reports that the capacity behind the May uplift came from a compute agreement with SpaceX covering the Colossus 1 data centre, more than 300 megawatts of power and over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, brought online within the month of the announcement. That is a considerable infrastructure commitment, and it explains how Anthropic was able to offer a 50% increase at all. The question now is whether the pull-back to 125% of the original baseline reflects ongoing capacity planning, cost considerations, or both.
Anthropic has tried to temper the disappointment with a promise of things to come. In its clarification post, the company said it is ‘working on exciting changes that will make it feel like you’re getting more from Claude, while having more visibility and control of your usage,’ adding that it cannot ‘wait to share them.’ What those changes are remains unspecified.
For now, the timeline is clear: the current 50% temporary increase to Claude Code weekly limits remains in place through 13 September, with the new permanent 25%-above-baseline ceiling kicking in on 14 September. Users who want to make the most of the higher allocation have until then to do so.
