Review: Fonerange Rugged Android Phone

As people begin to spend more and more on mobile phones and the technology becomes more and more brittle and expensive to replace, there has been a rising number of people asking for a device that can handle a more challenging life without compromising on features.

Fonerange attempt to answer that call with their Rugged Android device.

The Rugged Android is a waterproof, shockproof and dustproof phone made to survive up to 30 minutes underwater, endure the everyday drops dealt by even the most prolific butter fingers and remain unscathed by dust from anything from a building site to a sandstorm.

On the tech front the phone offers Android 4.0, Dual SIM capabilities, a 3.5mm audio jack and speaker as well as a 3.5″ touch screen display and long battery life. Plus access to the android stores ever-growing list of apps.

Unfortunately, to call this phone “rugged” seems like a bit of an overstatement as the most important feature of such a phone, the shockproof feature, is severely lacking. Coming with a warning in the box that drops of over 1.2 metres (under 4ft) will cause damage to the phone.

At 6ft 2″, if I was to be standing and reading off this phone I would be holding it higher than 1.2 metres which seems like a pretty big flaw. One of the better features of the phone’s ability to survive drops is the screw-on back piece that keeps the battery from falling out, though still much more fiddly than the option taken by Apple with iPhone.

This phone is a budget smart phone and that is very obvious using the device but for £89.99, is extremely good value but if you’re looking for a phone able to withstand the elements, it would be worth considering investing more.
