KB5002914 Excel copy paste bug hits four Office versions after record Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has confirmed that the KB5002914 Excel copy paste failure is real, reproducible, and currently without an official fix, leaving users of four Office versions unable to move data around their spreadsheets without realising anything has gone wrong. The bug surfaced in the wake of Microsoft’s September 2026 Patch Tuesday, which TechRepublic reports addressed 974 vulnerabilities across Microsoft products, making it the company’s largest Patch Tuesday release on record.

What the KB5002914 Excel copy paste bug actually does

The failure mode is frustratingly quiet. When the issue occurs, a user attempts to paste content, the source cell or range stays selected, the destination is left completely unchanged, and Excel does absolutely nothing to flag the problem. No beep, no error dialogue, no warning of any kind.

‘Although users try to paste content, the source remains selected and the destination is unmodified,’ Microsoft said in an updated support document. ‘When this issue occurs, users receive no indication of the failure, such as a beep or error message.’

Beyond copy and paste, users reporting problems on Reddit and the Microsoft Q&A forums say the same update also breaks autofill and formula dragging, two features that anyone doing serious spreadsheet work relies on constantly. Microsoft has confirmed the issues affect Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016.

A record-breaking update with an unwelcome side effect

KB5002914 was released on 9 September 2026 as part of Patch Tuesday. According to Office Watch, that update fixed 966 flaws and two zero-days across Microsoft products. TechRepublic’s tally of 974 vulnerabilities, counting across the full September release, makes this the largest Patch Tuesday on record, and, as it turns out, one with a sting in the tail for Excel users.

Microsoft says it is researching the issue and will post further information when it becomes available. That is not especially comforting if your workflow depends on basic clipboard operations working reliably, so in the meantime, there is a workaround.

How to roll back KB5002914 and restore functionality

Affected users have reported that uninstalling KB5002914 restores normal copy and paste behaviour. Microsoft has published the specific commands needed, which vary by Office version and must be run from a Command Prompt opened with administrator privileges.

For Office 2016, the command is:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}" "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" "1033" "0"

    For Office 2019:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.10417.20197

    For Office 2021 and 2024:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.20326.20132

Rolling back a security update is never ideal, KB5002914 exists to patch a long list of remote code execution and information disclosure vulnerabilities, but for organisations where broken copy and paste is causing real productivity losses, the commands above are what Microsoft itself is pointing users toward while a proper fix is prepared.

    September’s wider Patch Tuesday fallout

The Excel clipboard bug is not the only September 2026 Patch Tuesday complication Microsoft is dealing with. Separately, Microsoft issued emergency out-of-band updates to resolve Remote Desktop Services failures caused by the September security updates, as well as Hyper-V and USB audio problems on some Windows versions.

It is a pattern that has become grimly familiar across recent months. In July, Microsoft fixed an issue that was preventing third-party applications from launching Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Office apps or opening documents on up-to-date Windows systems. The month before that, Microsoft addressed a bug that blocked Office for the web users from opening Excel and PowerPoint files, alongside a separate issue that prevented Windows 365 users from downloading and installing the Office suite.

For the KB5002914 Excel copy paste bug specifically, Microsoft’s support document remains the place to watch: the company has committed to posting further information there as it becomes available.
