GPT-6 Astra Plus Rollout Begins, but Check Work First

The GPT-6 Astra Plus rollout is under way, with OpenAI pushing its new flagship model to paid subscribers, though the path to finding it is a little less obvious than you might expect. If you have a $20 ChatGPT Plus account and can’t see Astra in the standard Chat model picker, try the Work section first: that appears to be where the model is surfacing before it becomes available in regular Chat.

OpenAI confirmed the sequencing in a post on X. ‘GPT-6 Astra is now available to all Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. It’s also live in the API,’ the company wrote. ‘It might take a few days to roll out to our Plus and Business users.’ In other words, this is a staged deployment, not a simultaneous switch-over for everyone who pays.

What’s Included, and What Costs Extra

OpenAI says Astra usage is included within existing subscription limits, so Plus users don’t need to buy a separate plan or upgrade to access it. If you burn through your included usage, additional credits will be available to purchase, but the base access comes with what you already pay for. That’s a reasonable move given the model is being positioned as a replacement for the previous tier, GPT-5.6 Sol, which free users still have access to alongside GPT-5.

The model is designed for heavier professional workloads: computer use, browsing, coding, scientific work, cybersecurity tasks, and longer-context sessions where maintaining coherence across a complex project actually matters. OpenAI says Astra is significantly better than GPT-5.6 Sol at maintaining context during complex work, which is where earlier models tended to drift if a task ran long enough to test their limits.

GPT-6 Astra Plus Rollout Extends Beyond ChatGPT

The rollout isn’t confined to the ChatGPT interface. According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Astra is becoming available through the OpenAI API as well as via Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock, expanding the model’s reach to enterprise teams who work outside the ChatGPT product entirely. That broader infrastructure access is new, it means organisations running OpenAI models through cloud providers get the update alongside consumer subscribers, rather than waiting for a separate enterprise release cycle.

On the enterprise side, OpenAI has also announced new plugins for ChatGPT Desktop that draw on the model’s browser use capabilities. Integrations from Oracle Analytics, Power BI, Navan, and Avalara are among those coming, according to OpenAI’s work-focused announcement. The move signals that the Astra launch is as much about embedding the model into existing enterprise toolchains as it is about upgrading the consumer chat experience.

Cybersecurity capabilities are being handled more carefully. OpenAI’s path-to-Astra documentation states that advanced cybersecurity work will initially be available only to a limited group of testers, with broader defensive access following through Daybreak Blue. The staged approach to that particular use case presumably reflects the sensitivity involved in giving a highly capable model free rein over security tooling, even for defenders.

Free-tier users are not part of this rollout. OpenAI has not said whether Astra will ever come to free accounts, or in what form if it does. For now, the model is a paid-tier feature, and the company hasn’t offered a timeline for any wider access.

The overall picture, then, is a gradual, layered release: Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium first via Work and Codex; Plus and Business users following over the coming days; API and cloud integrations live in parallel; cybersecurity features gated behind a separate tester programme. If you’re a Plus subscriber, check the Work section now, your access may already be live even if the regular Chat picker hasn’t caught up yet.
