
A new technical publication compiling 18 scientific articles on waste reduction in some of the planet’s most extreme research environments has landed at the centre of an expanding international climate partnership, as Türkiye positions its polar science programme alongside London’s climate action network ahead of COP31.
The Zero Waste Foundation launched the book “Zero Waste in the Polar Regions” on 7 August, produced with TÜBİTAK’s (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye) Polar Research Institute. Rather than treating waste management as an afterthought, the publication documents how zero waste principles can be engineered directly into the planning and logistics of Arctic and Antarctic scientific expeditions, from material selection and energy use to water management and transport.
Ten days after the book’s release, on 17 August, the Foundation signed a cooperation protocol with London Climate Action Week (LCAW), formalising a channel for technical exchange on zero waste and circular economy practice between Türkiye and one of the world’s most connected climate policy hubs.
Engineering waste out of extreme-environment science
The book’s central technical contribution is its focus on the operational architecture behind polar research rather than simply the disposal of waste once generated. Contributors, all scientists with direct polar research experience, address the scientific, technical, administrative and communication dimensions of applying zero waste methods where logistics are already difficult and resource margins are thin.
That means examining how expeditions are planned before departure, how materials and equipment are specified and used in the field, and how energy, water and transport systems are managed on site. The stated aim is to reduce waste at the point of generation rather than manage it afterwards, an approach that mirrors circular economy thinking increasingly applied in industrial and infrastructure sectors, but here transplanted into some of the harshest operating conditions on Earth.
The publication frames the Arctic and Antarctic as critical indicators of global climate change, arguing that environmental shifts recorded in these regions carry consequences that extend well beyond the polar geography itself. That framing is what gives a technically niche field, the logistics of polar fieldwork, relevance to a much broader climate and resource-efficiency audience.
Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Minister of Industry and Technology of Türkiye, said the book brought together two initiatives that both began in 2017. “The Zero Waste initiative launched under the leadership of H.E. Emine Erdoğan has grown step by step from a national initiative into a global one,” he said, adding: “At the same time, we began organising scientific expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Türkiye, enabling Turkish scientists to strengthen the country’s presence in polar research. Through this book, these two initiatives have come together.”
The work also draws on the wider zero waste vision advanced by H.E. Emine Erdoğan, Founder of the Zero Waste Movement, Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Zero Waste and Honorary President of the Zero Waste Foundation, situating the polar research findings within a broader policy programme rather than treating them as an isolated scientific exercise.
A formal channel into London’s climate network
The protocol signed with London Climate Action Week is designed to institutionalise knowledge exchange, joint initiatives and international dialogue on zero waste and circular economy approaches, giving Türkiye’s polar research and resource-efficiency work a direct route into a network that spans government, city administrations, business, finance, academia and civil society.
It was signed by Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and COP31 High-Level Climate Champion, and Climate Action Founder and CEO Nick Henry. “After this cooperation protocol, I hope we will carry out strong work and organize joint events at COP31 and London Climate Action Week,” Ağırbaş said.
For a technology and research audience, the significance lies less in the diplomatic signing itself than in what it enables operationally: a formal mechanism for sharing methodology, data and technical practice between Türkiye’s polar research infrastructure and an international climate ecosystem centred on London. That could mean shared standards for measuring resource use in scientific fieldwork, joint technical events, or cross-border collaboration on circular economy tools that extend beyond polar science into other resource-intensive research settings.
COP31 sets the wider frame, but the work is already under way
COP31 gives this cooperation a higher-profile diplomatic backdrop, but both the book and the LCAW protocol point to work that is already active rather than merely anticipatory. The Foundation’s agreement with LCAW is explicitly intended to support practical exchange within the London-based network in the near term, independent of the formal COP31 proceedings themselves.
Taken together, the two developments extend zero waste practice from a domestic Turkish policy initiative into a technical research discipline with international reach, and then into a formal international partnership structure. The emphasis throughout is on treating zero waste as a matter of systems design, covering planning, materials, energy and logistics, rather than reducing it to recycling or end-of-pipe waste management. For researchers and technologists working in resource-constrained or environmentally sensitive settings, whether polar stations, offshore installations or other remote infrastructure, the methodological detail in the polar research book may prove more durable than the diplomatic milestones surrounding its release.
